Accent tables can be a great DIY project

by guestpost on July 13, 2009

Accent tables can be a great DIY project for crafty, creative home decorators. Because they are often small, you can either easily make them or modify them to your own desires. Milk crates, vintage wooden boxes, cinder blocks, cardboard tubing and antique trunks are just a few items that can be turned into creative accent tables.  An old, weather beaten or water stained accent table can easily be rehabbed to make an attractive addition to any room.  When modifying an existing accent table, there are some great ways to make the project quick and simple.  Wood is one of the easiest materials to deal with if it isn’t damaged beyond recognition.  Going over a small wooden table with fine grade sand paper will do wonders.  After this, your imagination is the only thing that limits your design opportunities.  A high-quality spray paint made for furniture is a great place to begin.  Working with one or two colors, you can play with ready-made or homemade stencil designs.  Coating the final product with a layer or two of polyurethane will keep your paint job intact for many years.  Polyurethane is also a great liquid for adding collage detail to accent tables.  Many home stores also sell small cans of furniture paint, which are great for adding hand-painted details to accent tables.  You can always use the leftover paint for another piece of salvaged furniture.
